Pregnancy, weight gain or weight loss and other factors due to aging can contribute to an unflattering mid section and body contour. Excess fat, lax abdominal muscles and stretched skin can make it difficult to find clothing that fits well and can make swimsuit season an uncomfortable and disheartening experience. Abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” surgery can help to flatten and shape the tummy and hips by removing excess fat and tightening loose skin and muscles in the abdomen. With tummy tuck surgery at TMB, you can finally have the flat, tight, toned tummy you desire and can wear any type of clothing (even a bikini!) with confidence.
Abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a “Tummy Tuck,” is a surgical procedure that creates a flatter, more toned tummy by reducing excess fat, skin and tissue in the abdomen. Many patients seek out Abdominoplasty after pregnancy or severe weight loss/ gain. Abdominoplasty surgery can correct a protruding tummy, folds or “spare tires,” loose crepey skin, and can also improve the appearance of stretch marks. The procedure is performed under general anesthetic and can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours depending on the complexity of the case. In order to ensure the highest level of safety and comfort, Dr. Born prefers his Abdominoplasty patients to stay at the surgical suites overnight for observation and care. The procedure itself often begins with Liposuction to remove excess fat from the abdomen and flanks. Once the appropriate amount of fat has been removed, Dr. Born will make 2 incisions – one around the navel and another close to the pubic area from hipbone to hipbone. The skin is then separated from the abdominal muscles. Using internal sutures, Dr. Born pulls together and tightens the muscle wall, restoring it to a firmer, tighter position and narrowing the waistline. The abdominal skin is then pulled over the new, tighter muscles and the excess skin is removed. A new navel is re-attached in the most natural position and the incisions are closed and held with surgical tape to minimize any pulling. After your Abdominoplasty, a temporary tube may be placed under the skin to prevent the buildup of any excess fluids; this is usually removed 3 to 4 days after surgery. A compression garment must be worn and you will be instructed on all post operative care before going home. Recovery time varies from patient to patient, but most find they can return to their normal activity levels approximately one month after surgery.
